How can I overcome a stutter? Is there a cure for stammering and stuttering ? Where can I find out about techniques to eradicate stuttering? Are there any specialised speech courses for stammering? These are questions that I am asked on a regular basis by people who contact me with regards to their speech, people who have had enough of living life with a stutter or stammer.
The majority of these people are more than willing to work very hard in their quest to achieve fluency and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that they succeed. They are fully aware as to how massive the reward would be and therefore have a great determination and attitude towards attaining their goal.
Unfortunately not everybody who gets in contact with me has this positive attitude. They seem as if they are looking for some type of miracle, a magic potion that will cure their stutter once and for all. Sorry people – this just isn’t going to happen.
I was explaining to a young man from London, only this morning, the importance of practice when attempting to overcome a stammer . I have to say that he didn’t seem to be listening to me as he continued to make excuse after excuse. "I am ashamed to practice with my family and friends, plus they do not have the time for me as they are all busy people".
There are many phrases that spring to mind; Rome was not built in a day, when you build a house, you build the foundations to start with etc. If this person was unable to practice with his friends and family then he will need to find somebody else to practice with as this is the only way that any stuttering cure techniques can become a natural part of his speech. Practicing on your own is just not the same. When I had a stutter I could actually speak perfectly fluently when I was on my own.
