After learning the techniques I am about to share with you, I was able to start speaking fluently and confidently without having to go back to visit my speech therapist ever again.
Attempting To Overcome Stuttering And To Achieve Total Fluency
At the age of twenty-two I started on journey that I hoped would result in me being able to achieve total fluency in my speech. I had had a stutter for eighteen years by this stage and had just about taken as much as I could. I needed to find some kind of “cure for stuttering” as I could not bare the thought of having this most frustrating speech impediment for the rest of my life.
I strongly believed that I could overcome the stutter and this positive attitude was a vital characteristic right the way through my journey. So why did I have such a strong belief that I could “stop stuttering”? Well there were times when I could speak without even a hint of a stuttering problem. As an example; when talking to my girlfriend, a person I feel very comfortable with, I was perfectly fluent. If her parents walked into the room and started to ask me questions then the stutter would suddenly appear with full force. I felt rather uncomfortable speaking to her parents.
Just in that example, above, there was a lesson for me to attempt to learn. When feeling comfortable I could talk without any problems; when feeling uncomfortable I struggle. Lesson number one: Learn how to speak when feeling uncomfortable. Lesson number two: In what way do you speak differently when you feel comfortable compared to when you feel uncomfortable? Lesson number three: Learn ways to eradicate this regular feeling of discomfort.
By now you may be starting to understand how my mind works; I was constantly trying to learn from my mistakes; I was constantly asking myself questions; questioning why I had a stutter and what I needed to do to achieve fluency.
I have to admit that the journey was quite a long one and that it took me nearly a year to succeed in my quest of achieving total fluency.
